Ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C, is one of the most sought after water-soluble antioxidants today. As the threats of different viruses intensify, we too begin to realize the need for strong immunity. Vitamin C is frequently held as a top-tier option among all the vitamins when it comes to promoting immune efficiency.
Since the human body is not capable of producing vitamin C, taking in ascorbic acid may be done to prevent or treat low vitamin C levels.
Ascorbic acid is used for the prevention and or treatment of vitamin C deficiency. The lack of vitamin C in one’s body is unhealthy and may lead to more serious complications like scurvy. Scurvy is a disease caused by the severe lack of vitamin C, and when left untreated, this disease may cause further problems such as anemia, unnecessary gum bleeding, bruising, swelling, exhaustion, pain, and more.
In some cases, doctors prescribe ascorbic acid medications for other uses.
Ascorbic acid is usually taken orally. On average, the recommended daily dosage for adults is 70 mg to 150 mg. For special cases like those being treated from scurvy, the recommended daily dosage ranges from 300 mg to 1 g.

When taking in ascorbic acid, it is normal to experience a few side effects as your body tries to adjust to the medicine. Some of these side effects include diarrhea, redness, headache, nausea, and stomach cramps. However, if these continue to persist or worsen, be sure to seek medical attention immediately.
